September 8-10: Monks of the Gaden Shartse Visit

This year, ¡Globalquerque! truly is a week-long celebration of world music and culture. It starts off with a special visit from the Monks of the Gaden Shartse Monestery.

mandalaOn September 8, the monks will begin creating a sand mandala at the Maxwell Museum. Mandala literally means "that which extracts the essence." These two-dimensional sand mandalas are incredibly intricate and labor-intensive.  At times the execution of the design pivots on the placement of a single grain of sand. A sand mandala is where iconography, placement, color and form combine to create a vision that represents the entire universe.

At the end of their visit, they will hold a dissolution ceremony. As unique as its creation, the ritual of dissolution is profound; and in graphic fashion it expresses the core teachings of impermanence. The mandala's sand is ritually swept together and offered as a blessing to all present. The remaining sand is then taken to a body of water where it is offered to bless and purify the surrounding environment and all beings therein.

The public is welcome to drop by the Maxwell Museum and observe the creation and dissolution for free.

In addition, there will be a chanting demonstration/workshop on September 9th and a performance of A Journey to the Roof of the World: Sacred Chants and Dances of Tibet at the KiMo Theatre on September 10.

This is a joint project between AMP Concerts and the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology with funding from WESTAF (the Western Arts Federation) and the National Endowment for the Arts.
