Artist Statement

I was excited to be selected as the 2022 Official Poster Artist for ¡Globalquerque!

New Mexico's 18th Annual Celebration of World Music & Culture held Albuquerque, NM. I wanted to create a visual explosion that captures the dynamic intersection of music and culture that represents the ¡Globalquerque experience!. It was a challenge to represent so many different kinds of people without excluding any groups, so I settled on the idea of using animals. I’ve selected one endangered species from each of the seven continents playing seven different instruments. The coyotes dancing in the foreground represent New Mexico and the ¡Globalquerque! audience. I took special notice to represent the Ukrainian struggle with the traditional Ukrainian kobza, (part of the lute family, with 4 gut-strings and a body hewn from a single block of wood) in the center of the image.

Animal Representations:
North America | Accordion | American Bison
South America | Cymbals | Wooly Monkey
Europe | Kobza Guitar | Barbary Sheep
Africa | Congos | Grevy’s Zebra
Australia | Harmonica | Koala
Antarctica | Maracas | N. Rockhop. Penguin
Asia | Sax | Amur Tiger

Sean's original piece is entitled "Los Animales Nocturnos"
